Keywords: speaking skill, speaking anxiety Speaking is an oral language skill that is functional in everyday human life. By speaking we can obtain and convey information. However, for ESL Student, speaking English fluently is a big challenge because they do not use English as a language of daily communication. And the fact is that there are still many students who cannot speak English fluently and correctly. So, it becomes a problem for students which arises as a form of anxiety when speaking. This research aims to identify the types of students’ speaking anxiety. This research also aims to analyze the factors that influence students’ anxiety in speaking English. In addition, this research aims to find out the suitable strategies to overcome the students’ speaking anxiety. This research used descriptive research and qualitative as the approach. The data sources from this research were four students who had the highest score of speaking anxiety level among forty other students in class B in the fourth semester of English Education Department at State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The instruments of this research are questionnaire and interview. The interview was conducted after the results of the questionnaire came out which stated that there were students who had a high level of anxiety in speaking English, who would later be used as sources in the interviews. Data analysis for this research uses the theory of Spielberger et al. (1976), Horwitz et al. (1986) and Kondo & Ying-Ling (2004). According to the data analysis, it found that there are three types of speaking anxiety experienced by students, namely trait anxiety, state anxiety and situation-specific anxiety. Researcher also concluded that there are three factors that influence students so that speaking anxiety arises, including communicative apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. In addition, the researcher also concluded that there are several strategies that can be used to overcome speaking anxiety, including preparation, relaxation, positive thinking and peer seeking.
