Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullsh Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Ida Isnawati, M.pd Keyword : Students Difficulties, Test of English as Foreign Language A standardized exam called the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is used to figure out how effectively a student understands the language. There are three sections to this test: written structure and expression, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension. To gauge students' English competency, State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung administers its own proficiency exam. The TOEP exam, also known as the Test of English Proficiency, is an exam that is frequently given. Its instrument is similar to the TOEFL. Students studying English have various challenges when taking this exam. Data from the score results made public by P2B (Language Development Center) demonstrate this. Out of the 257 students that took the TOEP Test, 120 students studied English and received low results. It is possible to state that up to 47% of English students did not pass this TOEP test. Despite having completed advanced grammar classes, they still struggle with listening comprehension and reading comprehension. This indicates that they have trouble taking the TOEP Test, which is graded by 120 English students with poor performance. The formulation of research problems were : 1) What are linguistic difficulties encountered by English Students of English Department at State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung in Doing Test of English Proficiency ?. 2) What are non linguistic difficulties encountered by English Students of English Department at State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung in Doing Test of English Proficiency ?. This study used a qualitative approach to its design. The test was implemented in 2020, and the study's subjects were English students enrolled in the 2018–19 school year. Six students with low or below 400 scores and two with above 400 scores served as the subjects. Documentation and interviews were employed by researchers as study instruments. In this research, data analysis involves classifying, condensing, presenting, and extracting conclusions from the data. Finally, saturated data is obtained using triangulation. According to the study's results, English students encountered a number of difficulties when taking the TOEP exam. It is divided into two categories linguistic difficulties and non-linguistic difficulties. In linguistic difficulties, there are several difficulties faced by English students, including : Main Idea, Understanding Vocabulary, Finding Conclusions, Knowing Vocabulary in Spoken Language, Recognizing Idioms and Slang, Students' Feel When the Native Speaker Speaks. The researcher discovered a number of issues that English learners faced in non-linguistic difficulties, including : Managing Time and Technical problems.
