Politeness Strategies Performed by English Lecturers in Giving Instruction to the Students in Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. English Education Department. Keyword: English Lecturers, Giving Instruction, Politeness Strategies, Speech Act English Lecturers is the key of communication in classroom interaction run smoothly. One of communication is in giving instruction to students. They have to wisely in using language to preserve the speaker and the addressee feelings. Furthermore, they applied politeness startegies to convey the instruction to students. There is theory about politeness by Brown and Levinson, (1988) who proposed politeness into four strategies namely bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off record. The politeness strategies employed by teacher and students in classroom interaction. There is study by Gunas, (2022) that revealed teacher applied three politeness strategies namely bald on record, positive politeness and negative politeness during classroom interaction. Referring to the result, the researcher aim to investigate politeness strategies performed by lecturer in giving instruction and revealed their reasons apllied kind of politeness strategies. The formulation of the research questions are: what politeness strategies are commonly performed by lecturer in giving instruction to the students during the English Class at English Department of Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung? Why politeness strategies performed different between male and female lecturer in giving instruction to the students? The aim of this study is to reveal politeness strategies are commonly performed by lecturer in giving instruction to the students during the English Class at English Department of Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung and the reasons of male and female lecturer performed different politeness strategies in giving instruction to the students. The study employed qualitative method in design of descriptive qualitative with analysis document which focus on pragmatics and interview. The instrument of this study is the researcher and supported by tools namely recording and interviewing. The subject of this study is female and male’s English Lecturers of Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The collecting data use recording in four English classes by two different Lecturers. The researcher transcript the data record to find the data. The data are giving instruction utterances related to politeness strategies.
