Abstract

The objective of this research is to comprehensively understand Hassan Hanafi’s theory and its application to subjective Qur’anic hermeneutics based on his works. Hanafi’s theory of hermeneutics is based on his criticism of traditional tafsir which pays more attention to making the text as a means of justification and stressing the meaning of the literal word of the text without any dialogue with the problem of reality wherein the interpreters existed. For Hanafi’s theory of social hermeneutics and thematical interpretation, to interpret is not only to deduce a meaning from the text but also to deduce a meaning from reality to the text, i.e. to produce a new meaning. Text has to be considered as something attracting a dynamic and creative meaning. Because the text is a product of a certain historicity that correlates with its circumstance with its huge possibility of reality, it has to be readable in and for contemporary needs
