Abstract
Putri, Ilma Fitria. NIM 126203212171. 2025. The effectiveness of small group discussions technique on speaking skills in narrative texts of the tenth grade students at MAN 3 Tulungagung. Skripsi. Tadris Bahasa Inggris. Fakultas Tarbiyah dan Ilmu Keguruan. UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Ringgi Candraning Prawerti, S.Pd.I, M.Pd Keywords: Speaking skill, Small group discussion, Narrative text. Speaking is an essential language skill in English learning, but many students struggle with anxiety, lack of confidence, and limited practice opportunities. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of using the Small Group Discussion (SGD) technique to improve speaking skills in narrative texts among tenth-grade students at MAN 3 Tulungagung. The research question is: “Is there a significant difference in students’ speaking skills before and after being taught using the small group discussions technique?” This study applied a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test model. The participants were 18 students from class XA. Data were collected through oral tests, and students' speaking abilities were assessed based on grammar, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and pronunciation. The collected data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test via SPSS. The results indicated that the mean pre-test score was 13.94, while the post-test mean score rose to 20.17, showing notable improvement. Statistical analysis showed a p-value of < .001, indicating a significant improvement that was not attributable to chance. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that the Small Group Discussion technique is effective in improving students’ speaking skills, particularly in narrative texts. Moreover, this method fostered a supportive and low-anxiety environment, enabling students to speak more confidently and actively.
