Abstract
English remains the most studied language worldwide, with over 1.5 billion speakers globally. Mastery of English, especially in speaking, is essential for global communication and interaction across various sectors, including economics, social, and education. Speaking English is not easy. Many learners struggle with speaking English due to factors like nervousness, lack of vocabulary, and difficulty expressing ideas. Mind mapping, developed by Tony Buzan (1993), is a visual tool designed to enhance creative thinking, memory, and the organization of ideas. In the context of speaking practice, especially in presentation, mind mapping has been helping students organize and express their ideas more effectively. This study aims to investigate students' perceptions on using mind mapping in speaking practice, including 7-minute presentation and the challenges they faced. This study aims to answer two questions: (1) How are students perception on the use of mind mapping in speaking practice? and (2) What challenges do students face when using mind mapping? To answer these questions, a quantitative approach with survey design was employed. This research was conducted at Fajar English Course (FEC) in the Advance class. Data were collected from 17 students through a questionnaire to investigate their perception and the challenges of mind mapping in speaking practice. The data were analyzed using a descriptive method. The results presented that students look mind mapping positively as a tool for organizing thoughts and improved their selves in speaking. However, some challenges were reported, such as the time-consuming for creating mind maps, anxiety, and difficulties in adjusting to the technique. Despite these challenges, mind mapping was seen as a valuable tool for helping students express their ideas more structured and effectively. Mind mapping was a helpful technique to support English speaking practice, providing structure and helping in improving speaking practice. While there were some challenges, especially related to time, anxiety, and adaptation, the positive impact on speaking skills, makes it a valuable tool for language learners, especially for 7-minute presentations
