The Effectiveness of Using Snake and Ladder Board Game As Media Towards The Students` Recount Speaking Ability at The First Grade of SMKN 1 Bandung in Academic Year 2016/2017. Thesis. Keywords: The effectiveness, Snake and ladder board game, Recount Speaking Ability Speaking is the main skill in oral communication, but also it is a difficult ability for language learning to be mastered. Based on the observation, it was found that most of students could not speak English well because of some factors. Those were lack of vocabulary, grammatical error, mispronunciation, and sometimes not confidence to speak. Therefore, the researcher used snake and ladder board game as media in teaching speaking to know whether snake and ladder board game is effective in teaching speaking or not. The formulation of research problems in this research were: first, how is the students` recount speaking ability before being taught by using snake and ladder board game? second, how is the students` recount speaking ability after being taught by using snake and ladder board game? Third, is there any significant different score of the students` recount speaking ability before and after being taught by using snake and ladder board game? The purposes of this research were : first, to know the students` recount speaking ability before being taught by using snake and ladder board game. Second, to know the students` recount speaking ability after being taught by using snake and ladder board game. Third, to know the significant different score of the students` recount speaking ability before and after being taught by using snake and ladder board game. In this research, the researcher used quantitative approach, exactly in pre-experimental design. The population of this research was students of accountancy class at the first grade of SMKN 1 Bandung that consists of four classes. The sample of this research was 38 students of X AK-3 class of SMKN Bandung. The research instrument used was test. In this research, the researcher conducted three steps. They are pre-test, treatment, and post-test. After getting the data of the students` speaking score, either from pre-test and post-test, the researcher used IBM SPSS Statistic 16.0 for computing the data, to know whether the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted or not, the researcher used paired sample t-test formula. But, before using Paired Sample T-Test formula, the researcher tested normality first to know whether or not the data is in normal distribution. The finding showed that there is significant difference between the result of pre-test and post-test. The mean of pre-test was 55.66, while the mean of post-test was 78.82. From statistical calculation, the value of tcount was 25.375 was higher than ttable 2.026. It means that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and it can be infered that there was a significant difference between the result of pre-test and post-test. The use snake and ladder board game is effective towards the students` recount speaking ability at the first grade of SMKN 1 Bandung. In other word, the use of snake and ladder board game can be used as an alternative media to teach recount speaking ability towards the students of X AK-3 class at the first grade of SMKN 1 Bandung.
