Abstract

Morphological awareness is the ability to understand and manipulate the smallest unit of language, known as morphemes. Some previous studies have stated that morphological awareness plays a significant role in several aspects of language. including reading & writing. However, there are still very few studies that examine the relationship between morphological awareness and listening aspects of language. The purpose of this study is to find out if there is a relationship between morphological awareness and listening comprehension of 5th semester students majoring in English education at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. This study uses quantitative research methods using correlation research design. The subjects of this study were 40 active students majoring in English education 5th semester as a representation of the entire population. Data were collected through 2 kinds of tests, namely morphological awareness and listening comprehension tests which were then analyzed using the Spearman Rho correlation test. The results of the test showed a positive correlation between the two variables with a correlation value of 0.046 which is smaller than the significance value of 0.05. The correlation coefficient is 0.318. This indicates that the correlation between the two variables is low. However, the results of this study show that morphological awareness also has a role in shaping a person's listening comprehension but not as a major factor. There are still other factors such as knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, etc. Therefore, teaching and developing listening skills should not focus on one aspect only but also on other aspects. The results of this study also open up opportunities for future research to Identify the other factors and how they can be related to listening skills.
