Abstract
Speaking is one of the skills or abilities in English to express thoughts and make comments, and speaking in English involves expressing thoughts, commenting, rejecting opposing viewpoints, and asking and answering questions. Speaking ability refers to the ability to express or produce an opinion or idea through spoken sounds, as well as the ability to converse with others. In this context, the puppets' media storytelling strategy emerges as a potential solution. The purpose of this research is to determine whether the use of a storytelling strategy using puppets in the ninth-grade students at MTs Darussalam Rejotangan Tulungagung significantly affects students’ speaking abilities compared to those who do not use this method. The research used a quantitative research approach using a quasi-experimental design, and this involved two groups of subjects, namely the experimental group and the control group. The population of this research were ninth-grade students at Mts Darussalam Rejotangan Tulungagung, with a sample size of 29 students in the experimental class and 26 students in the control class. The data collecting technique uses an oral test instrument. The method of data analysis used comparative analysis in the form of an Independent T-test by using SPSS version 27.0 for Windows. The result of the Independent T-test showed that the sig value was 0.000, and it was lower than 0.05. There were significant differences in the mean score of students who were taught storytelling strategy with puppet media and those who were not. That is why the Null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the Alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Thus, the strategy of storytelling with puppets in speaking ability was very effective for ninth-grade students of MTs Darussalam Rejotangan Tulungagung. The conclusion and suggestion of the application of a storytelling strategy with puppet media in speaking class can make students more enthusiastic and excited about the learning process and storytelling strategy with puppets media was found to be effective on speaking skills in ninth-grade students.
