Abstract
Husna. Umi. Student Registered Number 12203183069. Thesis. An Analysis of the Directive Act on Donald Trump Speech at Davos 2018. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keyword: Directive Act, Donald Trump, Speech Act. Language is one of the tools of communication. In various forms of communication, people need language to convey messages and also to express themselves. When people express themselves, they not only produce utterances containing grammatical structures and words, they also perform actions through those utterances. Given that in lectures, the researchers, especially students of the English Language Institute, observed that many students have to present their materials and arguments as information, while public speaking serves as education. When conveying information, they sometimes experience constraints on requests and commands, constraints on vocabulary and word choice. Therefore, the researcher is very interested in overcoming these problems by finding suitable alternatives for students who have difficulty in public speaking. Speech is one of the things that often happens in public speaking, one example of speech to make the recipient do or sometimes not do something is by speaking. So it will be very helpful if they get good coaching from the President. This study purposes to find and identify the directive acts used in Donald Trump's speech in Davos. This research has two problem formulations. First, what are the kinds of directive acts used in President Donald Trump's speech? Second, what are the functions of directive speech acts used in President Donald Trump's speech? This research is included in library research. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. For the subject in the study as a speech script “President Donald Trump at Davos 2018”. The speaker's speech is the data of this research which contains speech acts. This research uses documentary techniques to collect data with every utterance that may be discussed. In this study, the theory used is based on Searle (1969) which states that directive speech acts are speech acts spoken by speakers and have the intention to receive certain responses from their speech partners. In addition, utterances containing directive acts are classified into five types of utterances, namely: commanding, requesting, pleading, forbidding and advising. The results of this study reveal that there are five types of speech act findings consisting of: [1] commanding, [2] requesting, [3] pleading, [4] forbidding, [5] advising. Based on these terms, the researcher found 6 commanding, 6 requesting, 2 pleading, 2 forbidding and 3 advising directive speech acts. Then from the second result, the researcher also found the function of directive speech acts. In Donald Trump's speech, the five types of directive speech acts mentioned by Donald Trump are used through the utterances found in this speech.
