Abstract
In everyday conversations, meaning is not always conveyed explicitly. This phenomenon, known in pragmatics as conversational implicature, is also widely used in cinematic dialogue, including in the film Oppenheimer (2023) directed by Christopher Nolan. The film features characters engaging in nuanced conversations where the implied meanings subtly reveal power relations and social structures. The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify and categorise the dominant types of conversational implicatures used in the film's dialogue, and (2) to analyse how conversational implicature is utilized in the film to show social hierarchy among characters. This research focuses on analysing the types and functions of conversational implicatures in Oppenheimer's film, with an emphasis on how they act as linguistic tools to portray social hierarchy among the characters. This research uses a descriptive qualitative design with a literature approach, and applies the content analysis method to collect and interpret data from the film transcripts, with reference to Grice's (1975) theory of implicature and Davis & Moore's (1945) theory of social stratification. Analysis of 107 implicature data showed that Particular Conversational Implicature (PCI) was dominant, appearing in 93 data, while General Conversational Implicature (GCI) only appeared in 14 data. This finding shows that understanding the character's background and the historical context of the film is crucial to understanding the implied meaning. Implied speech has three main functions related to social dynamics: (1) displaying and differentiating social status found 16 data, (2) implicitly legitimising hierarchical structures found 17 data, and (3) offering symbolic rewards and motivational cues found 7 data. 7 additional data were also found outside the functions based on the theory, yet they still reflect social hierarchy. In conclusion, conversational implicature in the film not only functions as a pragmatic element in the dialogue, but also functions as a symbolic way to show social strata in the story. This research contributes to the fields of pragmatics and discourse analysis, by presenting an understanding of how implicit language is used to portray social hierarchy.
