Abstract
The thesis entitled “An Analysis of Deixis in ‘The Canterville Ghost’ Short Story by Oscar Wilde” was written by Mohammad Reza Ravida, Student ID Number 12203183189, English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, supervised by Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: Analysis, Pragmatics, Deixis, Novella, Context Understanding deixis helps to clear up the intended meaning of utterances in a speech event, bridging the gap between what is being uttered and what it actually meant within a specific context. This understanding is vital for successful communication and appropriate interpretation of language use, especially in instances where the context is not explicitly stated. The reason that makes the researcher used the novella entitled “The Canterville Ghost” by Oscar Wilde is that the researcher hopes that the reader can be more passionate and interested in learning about deixis. The primary objectives of this research is first to analyze the three types of deixis based on Yule’s theory; personal deixis (pertaining to speech event participant), spatial deixis (pertaining to the location of or described in speech event), and temporal deixis (pertaining to the time of or pointed out in speech event). The second objectives of this research are to find out the most prevalent, frequently appearing type of deixis utilized by the characters in the aforementioned novella. The object of this research is “The Canterville Ghost” novella. This research applies a qualitative research method involving content analysis. The data of this research was from the characters’ utterances, categorized based on Yule’s theory of deixis. The researcher scoured for the types of deixis according to Yule’s theory in the characters’ utterances in the novella. The researcher then analyzed and interpreted the acquired data earnestly. The steps in doing the analysis consisted of six steps: coding, organizing, categorizing, classifying, interpreting, and concluding. This research discovered all three types of deixis; personal deixis 371 times (72,20%), spatial deixis 131 times (25,50%), and temporal deixis 12 times (2,30%). The researcher found out that personal deixis is the most frequently used types in the utterances of the characters in “The Canterville Ghost” novella.
