Translation becomes the primary necessity for students who learn foreign language. Having ability in translation is very useful in understanding the materials that written in English. In the act of translating, the students are demanded to master the language components. Grammar is one of the language components that very important in translation work. If someone does not understand about grammar, he or she will be confused in receiving the meaning of the text. Translator as a language learner has to understand about grammar as well because all language skills of a translator are needed in the work of translation. Therefore, the researcher interested in finding the correlation between grammar mastery and translation ability. The formulation of the research problem was “Is there any correlation between sixth semester students’ grammar mastery and translation ability of English department at IAIN Tulungagung in Academic Year 2016/2017?”Then, the purpose of this research was aim to investigate the correlation between sixth semester students’ grammar mastery and translation ability of English department at IAIN Tulungagung in Academic Year 2016/2017. In this research, the research method used correlational design with quantitative approach. The population was all the students coming from sixth semester English department at IAIN Tulungagung in consisting 175 students. Meanwhile, the sample of this research was 40 students taken by using simple random sampling. The research instrument conducted through multiple choice test and subjective test. The data of this research was analyzed used Spearman Coefficient Correlation using SPSS 16.0 program. The result of this research showed that the mean score of students’ grammar mastery was 70.44. This score was in the level 66-75. It can be said that students’ grammar mastery was fairly good categorization. Besides, the mean score of translation ability was 73.75. It was in the level 66-75 which lies in fairly good categorization also. The correlation value between the grammar mastery and translation ability appeared from the computation calculation done by SPSS 16.0 showed 0.665. The score lies in the interval 0.60-0.799, it indicate that the correlation of both variables was high. Therefore, it implied “there is correlation between sixth semester students’ grammar mastery and translation ability of English department at IAIN Tulungagung in academic year 2016/2017”. Meanwhile, the significance of the correlation was found out by comparing the “ρcount” and “ρtable”. The ‘ρcount” (0.665) was higher than “ρtable” (0.405) at the level 1% and 0.313 at the level 5%. Since “ρcount” was higher than “ρtable”, the correlation was significant. Thus, the researcher took a conclusion that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) that stated there is significant correlation between sixth semester students grammar mastery and translation ability was accepted, automatically the Ho was rejected.
