Abstract
In English language teaching, the integration of authentic materials—such as videos, articles, songs, and social media content—has become increasingly recognized as a powerful strategy to expose learners to real-world language use. These materials, originally created for native speakers rather than classroom instruction, offer rich linguistic and cultural input that enhances communicative competence and learner motivation. However, the use of authentic materials is often limited in formal education due to rigid curricula and reliance on textbooks. This research explores the development of authentic materials in English language learning at the FEE Center, a non-formal education institution located in Kampung Inggris, Pare, Kediri. Using a qualitative approach with a single case study design, this study focuses on how tutors at the FEE Center design and deliver lessons without relying on formal teaching documents such as lesson plans or structured modules. Instead, they develop their own teaching content using authentic materials—such as videos/film, social media content, songs, and articles—that reflect the real use of English in everyday life. Data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with selected tutors. The findings reveal that the development of authentic materials at the FEE Center is flexible, tutor-driven, and highly adaptive to classroom situations. The researcher used sample that consists of 3 tutors. Tutors select, adjust, and deliver authentic content based on their personal teaching experience, the language level of their learners, and the contextual needs of the class. While the absence of structured modules poses challenges in preparation and material consistency, it also encourages creativity, independence, and innovation among tutors. This study concludes that the development of authentic materials at the FEE Center supports a more dynamic and meaningful language learning experience. It also highlights the need for a more structured yet flexible framework to support tutors in applying authentic-based instruction consistently and effectively.
