Abstract
The thesis entitled “Students' Perceptions on Their Difficulties in Speaking Performance of the Seventh Grade at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol Tulungagung” was written by Vadia Nafifa Naila Rahma, NIM 126203211076, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, supervised by Dr. H. Muh. Basuni, M.Pd. Keywords: students’ perceptions, speaking difficulties, English speaking performance. This study examines the perceptions of seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol regarding their difficulties in speaking English. The researcher used a quantitative method in the form of a survey in this study. To collect data, the researcher used a questionnaire distributed during English lessons. The researcher also interviewed students to explore their perceptions of the difficulties they face in speaking English. The results of the study on students' difficulties in speaking show that in linguistic aspects, students experience difficulties in grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary in English due to a lack of grammar and vocabulary skills, lack of practice, and difficulty in understanding complex sentences. In addition, they have difficulty adapting to speaking English because they use their native language more often, which results in a lack of communication habits. In non-linguistic aspects, students often experience difficulties in speaking English due to a lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, and negative feedback. Anxiety and fear hinder their confidence in speaking English. The results of the study on students' strategies for overcoming speaking difficulties include taking English courses, practicing with friends and teachers, watching English-language films with subtitles, reading English dictionaries, and using learning apps such as Duolingo. This study highlights the importance of understanding these challenges to provide better support for students. It suggests that future research should explore various theories related to speaking difficulties and identify specific challenges that can be addressed to improve students' speaking skills. Additionally, future research is expected to provide effective solutions to help students overcome speaking difficulties. In conclusion, this study offers valuable insights into students' perceptions of their speaking difficulties, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to create a more supportive learning environment for English language learners. These findings can serve as a reference for future researchers interested in exploring similar issues in the field of language education.
