Abstract

Vocabulary mastery in junior high school students is an important and fundamental thing. However, this crucial role is not followed by the procurement of appropriate media and learning strategies, thus causing its own challenges and obstacles in the world of English learning at the junior high school/MTs level. Therefore, this research was written with the aim (1) describing the procedure of developing the IMAGINCARD based on mnemonics learning media, (2) knowing the challenges or obstacles of the application of IMAGINCARD based on mnemonics, and (3) knowing the responses of teachers and students in the application of IMAGINCARD based on mnemonics as an alternative media in teaching vocabulary of students at MTsN 4 Tulungagung. This research uses a research and development (RnD) approach with stages following Reeves (2006). The research instruments were (1) interviews with teachers and needs analysis for students, (2) validation sheets from experts to determine the feasibility of the product, and (3) online survey questionnaries to determine student responses related to the learning media that had been developed. This research was conducted at MTsN 4 Tulungagung with the subjects being class VII students consisting of 28 participants (16 boys and 12 girls). The results of the research show that the mnemonics-based IMAGINCARD product that the author innovated is able to improve vocabulary mastery on subjects. This can be seen in the feedback of students and teachers who tend to be positive and the percentage of results from vocabulary that students are able to mention is in the range of 70-100 percent. Further discussion will be presented in this thesis. The results showed that IMAGINCARD based on mnemonics that the author innovated was able to improve vocabulary mastery in the subject. This can be seen in the percentage of results from vocabulary that students are able to mention in the range 70%-100%, with details (100%) as many as 8 students, (94%-96%) as many as 7 students, (90%-92%) as many as 6 students, (83%-87%) as many as 6 students, and (70%-76%) as many as 2 students. Thus, it can be concluded that (1) IMAGINCARD based on mnemonics can be used as an alternative media in learning English vocabulary, (2) collaboration between flashcard learning media and mnemonics learning strategy in IMAGINCARD makes this media more effective and systematic in improving English vocabulary, and (3) IMAGINCARD based on mnemonics learning media gets positive feedback from students and teachers.
