Abstract

Fahrudyningtias, Mutiara. Students Registered Number, 126203212143, 2025. The Correlation Between the Use of The Direct Method and Students’ Speaking Skill Improvement at The Eagle English Course Kampung Inggris. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Anis Azimah M.Pd. Keywords: Direct Method, speaking skill, language learning, correlation, Kampung Inggris, English course. English is widely acknowledged as a global language and serves as a key medium of communication in education, business, and international contexts. In Indonesia, where English is taught as a foreign language, speaking skill development often faces challenges such as limited exposure to authentic communication and students’ hesitation in practicing fluency. To address these issues, the Direct Method has been applied in various educational institutions, emphasizing immersion, spontaneity, and active oral practice in the target language. This research investigates whether there is a significant correlation between the frequency of the Direct Method’s application and the improvement of students’ speaking skills at The Eagle English Course in Kampung Inggris, Pare. Employing a quantitative correlational design, the study involved 50 purposively selected students from Step 2a, 2b, and Step 4. Data were collected through questionnaires and speaking performance assessments, then analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation formula with SPSS Statistics 27. The findings reveal that the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) is less than 0.001, which is below the threshold of 0.05. This indicates that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. The correlation coefficient (r) of 0.598 signifies a strong positive relationship between the two variables. This suggests that the more frequently the Direct Method is implemented, the more students’ speaking skills improve. The findings support the view that immersive, communicative approaches such as the Direct Method foster fluency, accuracy, and learner confidence in EFL contexts. In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence that consistent application of the Direct Method contributes significantly to students’ speaking skill development. These results have implications for teachers, students, and institutions, particularly in intensive language-learning environments such as Kampung Inggris, where maximizing communicative practice can effectively enhance learners’ oral proficiency.
