Abstract

Jannah, Nur Lailatul. 1880510230017. 2025. “The Use of Slang and Code Mixing among Youth on X Social Media Platform”. Thesis. English Language Education Department. Graduate Study Program. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The 1st Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd, and the 2nd advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: slang, code-mixing, social media, sociolinguistic The rapid development of technology and social media has significantly influenced the younger generation's communication. Several social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter), have become active in language development. The phenomenon that occurs on social media X is the use of mixed English and Indonesian, followed by the use of slang vocabulary in both languages. This phenomenon reflects language creativity and is related to social identity, group familiarity, and the growing trends in digital or online communities. Then, there is a reason behind using slang and code mixing in communicating on platforms X related to sociolinguistics. The formulation of the problem are: 1) what types of slang are used by users of platform X, and what do they mean? 2) What types of codemixing appear in user uploads? 3) What are the reasons behind using slang and code-mixing in everyday communication on social media? This study uses a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. The subjects of the study were active users of the X platform aged 18–25 years who used slang and code-mixing in their posts. The data collected were screenshots of posts containing slang and code-mixing, and the results of interviews with several users. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation and interviews via messages (DM) on the X platform. The data analysis technique used the thematic model from Braun & Clarke (2008) with stages such as identification, coding, theme search, review, and reporting. The study results showed that the slang used by users was divided into five types: fresh and creative, flippant, abbreviation, imitative, and clipping. Meanwhile, three types of code mixing were found: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The reasons behind the use of slang and code mixing are to show identity, follow trends on social media, facilitate communication with other users, adjust to the topics discussed, and as a form of self-expression. This finding shows that the choice of language in social media is not only a language style but also reflects social functions and group interactions, as well as the formation of identity in digital or online spaces.
