Abstract

The thesis entitled "Acceptability of Satire Expressions in 'Deadpool and Wolverine' Movie Subtitle" was written by Zakiyatul Muthoharoh, Student ID Number. 1860203222103, English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, supervised by Dr. H. Muh. Basuni, M.Pd. Keywords: Acceptability, Satire, Deadpool and Wolverine Movie, Subtitling, Translation Quality Assessment. Satire frequently appears in the movie as a form that conveys criticism towards social norms or institution. Understanding translated satire expressions in another language can be challenging because satire frequently involves irony, sarcasm, and other cultural references. This study aims to: (1) identify the types of satire that appear in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie and (2) analyze the level of acceptability of the Indonesian subtitle. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data consisted of satire expressions taken from the dialogue of the movie and their Indonesian subtitle. The analysis focused on three types of satire according to Harpham, namely Horatian, Juvenalian, and Menippean satire. The acceptability of the translated subtitles was evaluated using three categories proposed by Nababan: acceptable, less acceptable, and not acceptable. The findings show that Horatian satire appears as the most dominant type in the film, followed by Juvenalian satire, while Menippean satire occurs less frequently. The majority of the translated satire is categorized as acceptable, indicating that most of the satire expressions are conveyed naturally and appropriately in Indonesian. In conclusion, translating satire requires not only linguistic competence but also cultural awareness and pragmatic sensitivity in order to maintain the humor, irony, and critical tone of the original utterances.
