Abstract

The thesis entitled “An Analysis of Deixis in “The Help” Movie Script by Tate Taylor” was written by Fitrya Ismi Nuzula, NIM 12203193160, English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teaching Training, supervised by Dr. H. Muh. Basuni, M. Pd, Keywords : Deixis, The Help The aim of this study is to find kinds of deixis and functions of founded deixis that occur in The Help movie script. Researcher observed data from characters’ utterances in The Help movie script. The researcher chooses the topic of deixis in the movie to understand the storyline of this movie by analyzing characters’ words from reading the movie script. There are two problems that the researcher wanted to solve: there are kinds of deixis in The Help Movie script, and the function of each deixis found. In collecting data, the researcher used two steps. The first step is downloading The Help movie script from the internet. The second one is the researcher reading and choosing which section will become the research object, where the researcher chooses the spoken character’s words. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzes the data by selecting deixis among all the words in movie utterances, then classifying them into five kinds of deixis based on Levinson’s theory, and then determining the function of each deixis. The method of this research is by using qualitative content analysis. The reason behind selecting this method rather than descriptive qualitative research is because it understands meanings of the text by categorizing data. In analyzing data, the researcher uses the steps proposed in a research article by Bengtsson (2016) that are decontextualisation (reading and looking for meaning units, that is, appearance of deixis) recontextualisation (choosing which part could be included in the meaning units list), categorisation (categorizing data into a certain group; in this research, the categories are types of deixis) and compilation (drawing conclusions from all the data that were found). The results of this study, researcher found 2348 deixis in The Help movie script. They are consist of 1528 person deixis, 85 time deixis, 260 place deixis, 254 discourse deixis, and 221 social deixis. From overall collected data, person deixis is the most appeared. The next dominant data is place deixis that found in big amount because it consist big number of come & go. Discourse deixis also has considerable data with contribution from demonstrative this & that. Social deixis majority data found is deixis Miss. In conclusion, deixis found based on Levinson’s theory is of five kinds. All the deixis types are found in The Help movie script. Person deixis accounted for more than half of the total deixis data. From this study, it is also shown that deixis has a difference in function depending on what context the speaker intended
