Abstract
Singapore is a linguistically diverse nation, and its unique phonological characteristics have drawn significant academic interest. Among its varieties of English, Singapore Standard English (SSE) and Colloquial Singapore English (CSE), commonly known as Singlish, present unique articulation patterns influenced by various ethnic accents. This study focused on analyzing these distinctive patterns in the context of digital media. The objectives of this study were to examine the specific patterns and variations in the articulation of English consonants by Singaporean locals, to compare the articulation of English consonants by Singaporean locals with the phonemic inventory of Standard English, and to investigate the impact of the patterns of Singlish on the articulation of English consonants by Singaporean locals. This study employed a qualitative method and utilized a content analysis approach to portray the articulations of consonant sounds within the selected videos from TheSmartLocal. To ensure a comprehensive analysis, a total of five videos were chosen to encompass the diverse conversational and situational contexts. The selected videos were thoroughly examined to identify instances of consonant sounds, with particular attention given to factors such as voicing, place of articulation, and manner of articulation. Additionally, to enhance the rigor of the analysis, a systematic and meticulous approach was adopted in transcribing and categorizing the observed consonant sounds. The findings exhibited significant variations in the articulation of English consonants by Singaporean locals across the five selected videos from TheSmartLocal: variability in the realization of [th] sound, simplification of consonant clusters, replacement of single consonant in final position with a glottal stop, and vocalization of consonant /l/. These articulation patterns were systematically compared to the phonemic inventory of Standard English, uncovering significant deviations and unique phonological features characteristic of Singaporean English. Furthermore, the study revealed the impact of Singlish patterns on the articulation of English consonants by Singaporean locals. It was evident that the linguistic landscape of Singapore, enriched by the vibrant presence of Singlish, has contributed to the evolution of distinct phonetic characteristics in the speech of its inhabitants.
