Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis, titled “The Correlation Between Students’ Habits of Reading English Novels and Their Reading Literacy in Understanding Narrative Texts at SMK PGRI Wlingi,” was written by Ninda Nurul Khasanah, Student ID 1860203221016, under the supervision of Dr. H. Muh. Basuni, M.Pd. Keywords: reading habits, English novels, reading literacy, narrative texts, correlation. This study was motivated by the importance of reading literacy in the modern era, particularly in understanding information presented through written texts. However, students’ reading literacy in Indonesia remains relatively low. Several theories suggest that reading habits are closely related to reading literacy development. Reading habits, according to Schmidt and Retelsdorf (2016), encompass elements such as reading frequency, automaticity, and identity expression through reading. Meanwhile, reading literacy, as defined by OECD (2019), refers to the ability to understand, evaluate, and reflect on written texts. The correlation between these two variables may be positive, negative, or non-significant depending on the quality, consistency, and purpose of students’ reading activities. One factor believed to influence reading literacy is reading habits, specifically the habit of reading English novels. Reading novels is believed to enrich vocabulary, improve text comprehension, and train students’ critical thinking skills in understanding narrative texts. However, the strength or weakness of this relationship depends on various mediating factors such as reading quality, metacognitive awareness, and the type of reading material. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether there is a significant relationship between the habit of reading English-language novels and students’ reading literacy skills in understanding narrative texts at SMK PGRI Wlingi. The results of the study indicate that students’ reading habits fall into the moderate category with an average score of 59.61, while their reading literacy skills also fall into the moderate category with an average score of 18.59. Based on the normality test, the data were not normally distributed; therefore, the analysis utilized the Spearman correlation test. The results of the hypothesis test showed a correlation coefficient of -0.050 with a significance level of 0.521 (p > 0.05). This indicates that there is no significant relationship between the habit of reading English-language novels and students’ reading literacy skills in understanding narrative texts. The lack of a significant association may be due to several factors, such as students’ low reading proficiency, the predominance of external motivation, a lack of metacognitive skills, and reading materials that are more entertainment-oriented. Therefore, learning strategies are needed that not only encourage reading habits but also improve students’ reading comprehension.
