Abstract
Raihan Jogi Yuwono. Nim 126203203191. 2024. An Analysis Towards Local British Dialect Used In Football Commentary In English Premier League Match.. Skripsi. Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Dosen Pembimbing Lailatul Nikmah, M.Pd. Keyword: , British Dialect, Commentary style, Deliver Football commentary significantly enhances the audience's experience by employing a distinctive linguistic style known as Sport Announcer’s Talk (SAT). This study explores the integration of British English dialects within SAT during live English Premier League (EPL) commentaries. Using a qualitative approach, commentary from selected matches was transcribed and analyzed to identify phonological, lexical, and grammatical features of five prominent British dialects: Cockney, Scouse, Geordie, Brummie, and Mancunian. The findings reveal that each dialect contributes unique characteristics to the commentary, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the United Kingdom. Cockney is marked by vowel shifts and rhyming slang, while Scouse features a sing-song intonation and distinctive consonantal changes. Geordie includes vowel elongation and regional vocabulary, Brummie exhibits flat intonation and nasalized vowels, and Mancunian displays rhythmic patterns and colloquial expressions. These dialectal elements enrich the SAT register, adding authenticity and regional identity to sports broadcasting. The interplay between SAT and regional dialects demonstrates how language variation can shape the dynamics of football commentary, emphasizing the sociolinguistic intersection of sports and culture. This study highlights the role of dialectal diversity in creating a vibrant and engaging linguistic register, offering insights into the broader implications of language use in sports communication.
