Keywords: spelling errors, writing descriptive text, surface strategy taxonomy The factor in the writing that can not be ignored is the spelling of the word. Misspelling can change the meaning of a word or may be the reader can not catch the meaning of the writing. Moreover the word in English. Like in the word ‘quite’ means sungguh and ‘quiet’ means diam/ tenang errors in placement a letter ‘e’ caused the meaning changed. Another example in the word ‘sweet’ means manis with ‘sweat’ means keringat. Error in spell the letter ‘a’ become ‘e’ will be changed the meaning. Actually, misspelled words/ spelling errors is not the big crime in writing. Maybe the students in a hurry when they write down the word, so they make spelling error that can be called as ‘slip of the pen’. But, teachers can be suspicious that the students really do not know the correct spelling. It fearfully will be a habit in the future. So, it needs a research that describes what the spelling errors are made by the students in writing, especially in descriptive text. The formulation of research problem were: 1) What are spelling errors type in writing made by the first graders in SMP N 1 BOYOLANGU in the academic year 2015/2016? 2) How many frequency of each errors type in writing made by the first graders in SMP N 1 BOYOLANGU in the academic year 2015/2016?. The purpose of this research were to: 1) know what spelling errors type in writing are made by the first graders in SMP N 1 BOYOLANGU in the academic year 2015/2016 2) frequency of each errors type in writing made by the first graders in SMP N 1 BOYOLANGU in the academic year 2015/2016 . Research method: 1) the research design in this study was survey design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this research was the whole words in writing text produced by the first graders in SMP N 1 BOYOLANGU in the academic year 2015/2016, 3) the sample was the whole words in writing text produced by one of the class in the first graders in SMP N 1 BOYOLANGU in the academic year 2015/2016, 4) the research instrument was document, 5) the data analysis was using error analysis. Researcher find that from the whole words in writing text produced by one of the class in the first graders in SMP N 1 BOYOLANGU in the academic year 2015/2016 is 48 spelling errors. The types of error that students make are omission, addition, and misordering. Omission placed the first sequence the often error happened with 34 errors or percentage 70,83%, followed by addition with 13 errors or percentage 27,08%, and misordering with 1 error or percentage 2,08%. Findings from this research show that it is not related with the theory. The findings show there are three types of spelling errors these are omission, addition, and misordering. Error type of misformation does not relevant to be applied in spelling errors since the definition of misformation error is the use of the wrong form of the morpheme or structure. In this research, errors happened because of two factors, there are interlingual error and slip of the pen.
