Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keywords: Pragmatics, Assertive Act, Directive Act, “My Name is Khan” movie. Communication is used to express someone’s intention through an utterance. It means that when someone says something, they are not only saying but also uses it to perform act. In pragmatics, it is named as speech act. By using speech act someone can avoid a misunderstanding communication because someone can generate a meaning by looking at the context. Illocutionary is the central of speech act. In illocutionary, we not focus on sentence but on what people mean inside it. Illocutionary act is clasified into five types, two of them are assertive and directive act. Assertive is an utterance about what a speaker believes meanwhile directive act is an utterance to express about what speaker’s wish to make listener do something for speaker. The statements of the research problem were “what types of assertive acts are performed by the two main characters in “My Name is Khan” movie?” And “what types of directive acts are performed by the two main characters in “My Name is Khan” movie?”. Then, the purpose of this research was to find out the types of assertive and directive acts performed by the two main characters in “My Name is Khan” movie by Karan Johar. In this research, the researcher used library research with qualitative approach. The data of this research are utterances produced by the two main characters of “My Name is Khan” movie containing assertive and directive acts. This research used documentary technique to collect data. The result of this research showed that there are 43 data of asserting act, 6 data of concluding act, 12 data of describing act, 4 data of assessing act, and 3 data of complaining act. It means that asserting act is the most often appearing act than another acts. On the other hand, the researcher also found four types of directive act in “My Name is Khan” movie. It contains of 6 data express about advising act, 16 data of ordering act, 19 data of requesting act, and 6 data express suggesting act. Requesting act it the most often appears. Those are the result of data analysis from this research. In conclusion, assertive and directive are often appears in that movie. It means that speech act cannot be separated from communication. By studying speech act, we can know about speaker intended meaning and avoid misunderstanding communication. The last, the researcher suggests to the next researcher to conducts similar research by using different subject. The next researcher can used this research as reference.
