Abstract

ABSTRACT Audila, Nanda. Student Register Number. 12203193069. The Difficulties in Speaking English Faced by the Seventh Grade Students’ at SMPN 3 Kedungwaru. Sarjana Thesis. Education Departement. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S.S., M.Pd. Keyword: Speaking English, Difficulties People really need speaking skills for socializing so they could express themselves in society. However, mastering speaking skills was not an easy thing to did, especially a foreign language that was rarely used in everyday life. In Indonesia, especially in the world of education, the used of English in conversation was still rare compared to Indonesian or regional languages. In English teaching practice, sometimes teachers had to explain material in two languages so that students who were more familiar with their mother tongue could understand the material. While did an internship at SMPN 3 Kedungwaru and conducting pre-observations from November to December 2022, researchers found that speaking was the most difficult skill for seventh grade students to master. Even though they could write and did English questions well, they seem reluctant to communicate using English both inside and outside the classroom. They hesitate to answer questions in English orally, and still often mix English with other languages such as Indonesian or Javanese. The aim of this research was to find out in more depth what difficulties students experience when trying to speak English, and what factors underlie this condition. In this research, researchers used a qualitative method design. To obtain qualitative data, researchers conducted observations to observe the classroom atmosphere, the learning process, and the obstacles experienced by students when speaking English. After general observations, the researcher conducted interviews with four students to dig deeper into the difficulties of speaking English from the students' perspective. However, because the results of the observations were still too broad, the author decided to distributed a questionnaire with the aim of finding out and selecting which students had the most data to interview. To analyse qualitative data, researchers used the Miles and Huberman (1994) model as a reference, with three stages of analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research show that students had difficulty speaking English due to several factors which were divided into two aspects. The first was the cognitive aspect, which was influenced by student knowledge factors such as knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Students had difficulty conveying what they thought in English because their vocabulary knowledge was still very limited, besides that they tend to often lose focus when speaking because they were confused about the grammatical structure and the correct way to pronounce words. And the second was the affective aspect, which was influenced by the surrounding environment which has an impact on students' motivation and self-confidence. Many students are less motivated in learning English due to a lack of motivation and encouragement from those closest to them, this is exacerbated by students' lack of self-confidence because they are afraid of making mistakes and being laughed at by their friends.
