Abstract
Alfaiz, Mohammad Zaky. Student ID Number. 126203213204. 2026. An Analysis of Code Mixing and Code Switching in Selected Episode of Deddy Corbuzier’s YouTube Channel. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Luluk Anjarwati, M. Pd. Keywords: Code Mixing, Code Switching, Sociolinguistics, YouTube, Bilingualism This study aims to analyze the types of code mixing and code switching found in Deddy Corbuzier’s YouTube channel by applying Suwito’s theory. The research focuses on English Indonesian bilingual utterances produced by the host and guest speakers in two selected YouTube videos with podcast and entertainment content. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design, in which the data were collected through documentation by transcribing the spoken utterances from the videos. The findings reveal that there are 60 instances of code mixing and code switching identified in the data. Based on Suwito’s classification, two types of code mixing were found: inner code mixing and outer code mixing. Among these, outer was the most dominant type of code mixing, indicating that English lexical items were frequently embedded into Indonesian sentence structures. Regarding code switching, all two types proposed by Suwito were identified: internal code switching and external code switching. External code switching appeared as the most dominant type. The results indicate that code mixing and code switching are systematically used as communicative strategies rather than random language behavior. These phenomena reflect the bilingual competence of the speakers and serve various functions, such as emphasizing meaning, clarifying ideas, and creating a more engaging interaction with the audience. This study concludes that code mixing and code switching are integral features of bilingual communication in Indonesian digital media, particularly on YouTube platforms, and they represent linguistic creativity and sociolinguistic awareness in contemporary discourse.
