Abstract
Hakim Prasaja, Rahman. Student ID Number. 1860203221066, 2026. The Correlation between Students` Habits of Playing Video Games and Their English Vocabulary Achievement at UIN SATU. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. Advisor by Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: video game playing, vocabulary size, vocabulary exposure, correlation. Playing video games has become one of the most popular leisure activities among university students and is increasingly viewed as a potential source of English language exposure outside the classroom. Although previous studies have suggested that video games may support vocabulary learning, their findings remain inconsistent regarding the relationship between students' gaming habits and English vocabulary achievement. To address this issue, this study investigated whether there is a significant correlation between students' habits of playing video games and their English vocabulary achievement. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to determine the existence of a significant correlation between the two variables. This study employed a quantitative approach with the correlational design. The population in this study consisted of sixth-semester students in the English Language Education Program for the 2025/2026 academic year. A total of 33 students were chosen using purposive sampling. Data were collected by utilizing two instruments: a questionnaire and an English vocabulary test. The questionnaire was used to measure the duration, frequency, and consistency of video game playing, the types of video games played, and students’ attitudes toward English vocabulary exposure while playing video games. Meanwhile, data on English vocabulary achievement were obtained from an English vocabulary test adopted from the Vocabulary Size Test developed by Nation and Beglar, using only 1,000 to 6,000 words families out of 14,000 words families. The data were then analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test with the assistance of SPSS version 27. The results of the study revealed that there is no significant correlation between the habits of playing video games and students’ English vocabulary achievement. The correlation coefficient (r) obtained was +0.025 with a significance level (p) of 0.889, indicating a very weak and statistically insignificant correlation between the habits of playing video games and English vocabulary achievement. This study concludes that students’ frequent video game playing habits do not correlate with their English vocabulary achievement, especially if the vocabulary exposure is insufficient. These results highlight the potential of video games when they feature diverse vocabulary exposure.
