Abstract

Speaking fluency is an essential component of communicative competence, particularly in authentic interactions with foreign tourists. However, many English Education students still experience difficulties in maintaining fluent communication due to various linguistic, psychological, communicative, and environmental factors. Therefore, this research aimed to describe students’ speaking fluency based on Skehan’s temporal measures of fluency and to identify the internal and external factors influencing their speaking fluency during interviews with foreign tourists in Bali. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design. The participants consisted of eight sixth-semester English Education students selected through purposive sampling for video analysis and thirty-two students who completed open-ended questionnaires. Data were collected through video recordings of authentic interviews and questionnaire responses. The video data were analyzed using Skehan’s temporal measures of fluency, including speech rate, breakdown fluency, and repair fluency, while the questionnaire responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that students demonstrated varying levels of speaking fluency. Silent pauses occurred more frequently than filled pauses, while repetition appeared more frequently than self-correction, indicating different strategies for maintaining communication. The thematic analysis showed that internal factors, including vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, confidence, anxiety, and motivation, were the dominant influences on speaking fluency. External factors included tourists’ accents, communication management, background noise, crowded environments, weather conditions, and interview settings. In conclusion, students’ speaking fluency is influenced by the interaction of linguistic, psychological, communicative, and environmental factors. This research contributes to understanding students’ speaking fluency in authentic tourism-related communication and highlights the importance of providing more authentic speaking practice to enhance students’ communicative competence. Keywords: speaking fluency, temporal measures of fluency, foreign tourist interviews, descriptive qualitative research, English Education students.
