Keywords: FTA (face threatening acts), politeness strategy, instagram users This research was conducted in order to find out politeness strategies used to minimize FTAs (face threatening acts) performed by male and female instagram users. The first objective of this research is finding out face threatening acts commonly performed by instagram users and the second objective is finding out politeness strategy performed by instagram users to minimize FTAs (face threatening acts). Those two objectives are analyzed by using Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategy and (FTAs) face threatening act. The statement of the research problems are: 1) How do male and female instagram users perform Face Threatening Acts?2) What politeness strategies do male and female instagram users perform to minimize Face Threatening Acts? In this research, the researcher used qualitative research as the research method in this study. The data of this study are comments taken from instagram users that is comments of four artist endorsers. Those areZaskiaAdya Mecca, Chelsea Olivia,Rajeansid online shop, and Natashashawilona online shopcontaining face threatening acts and politeness strategies. The data were gotten from comments of instagram users. The data collection of this study is documenting. The researcher obtained the data from instagram users containing FTAs (face threatening acts) and politeness strategy. In gaining the trustworthiness of the data, the researcher used the theory credible and dependabletechnique from Robin Lakoff’s. Finally, in analyzing and interpreting the data, the researcher followed Donald Ary’s steps of data analysis, they are: 1) Organizing and familiarizing, 2) Coding and reducing, 3) Interpreting and representing. The result of data analysis shows that the instagram users performed 26 times FTAs (face threatening acts). The result of FTA, there are14 male instagram users for performing face threatening acts, 12 female users instagram for performing face threatening acts. Furthermore, the result of politeness strategiesperformed 14 times there are 5 male instagram users performing politeness strategies with positive politeness, and 9 female instagram users perform politeness strategies with positive politeness and the researchers did not find any negative politeness on instagram users in commenting a status. There are 13 Face Threatening Acts commonly performed by male and female instagram user: apologizing, congratulating, self-humiliating, expressing thanks, accepting thanks, criticizing, disagreeing, accusing, insulting, ordering, suggesting, reminding, and warning. Besides that, there are four kinds of positive politeness strategies, they noticing to the addressee’s wants, using in group identity marker, be optimistic and including speaker and hearer in an activity. There are five kinds of negative politeness strategies, they conventional indirect, be pessimistic, minimizing the imposition, apologizing and impersonalizing.From those results, the researcher conclude that the instagram usersperformed more face threatening act rather than performed politeness strategy. Instagram users do not need to understand the concepts of FTA and Politeness Strategy, but this topic is worth studying because it documents what is done by language users. The researcher hopes that this research will help the English Department Students in understanding the concept of Brown and Levinson about Face Threatening Acts and Politeness Strategy performed in instagram users. Thus it is expected for the linguistic students to be more sensitive toward the phenomenon so they can dig more information related to the FTA and Politeness strategy.
