Abstract
Key Term: effectiveness, constructivism, teaching speaking Speaking is the important element in language. When the students have a problem in speaking, practice and exercise make better. When the students are experience a problem in speaking, so they have a lot of practice and practice to get better. The most important is that students can develop a deep understanding of concepts and based on the context in daily life, because the active construction of knowledge as the students make and knowledge not is transferred as such and is not something that exists but must be constantly interpreted by their own in the formation of ideas. In addition, they have to practice every day to talk with friends and do not be afraid to be wrong. So, researchers want to know affectivities group discussion in the teaching of speaking at the second grade students at SMA 1 Karangrejo. The research studies are: (1). How is students’ speaking Achievement taught by using group discussion? (2) How is the students’ Speaking Achievement taught by not using group discussion? (3) Are there any significant different scores of the students’ Speaking being taught by using and without discussion? Therefore purposes of the study are to find out the students’ Speaking Achievement being taught by using group discussion, to find out the students’ Speaking Achievement being taught by not using g, to group discussion, find out significant different scores of the students’ Speaking taught by using and without group discussion. The researcher used the experimental research design by to conduct this study. The population is students of the second grade of SMA Negeri 1 Karangrejo. The sample is IPS class as experimental group and IPA class as control group. Every group has 35-38 students. The result of the study revealed that using group discussion is effective to practice in teaching and learning speaking English. This can be seen from the calculation of t-observed is 4.544 with 5% significant level with 73 df is 2.00. It means that the result of t-observed is higher than t-table. So, Tcount was greater than Ttable. This means that Ha which states that there is significant effect in using group discussion to teach speaking to the second graders at SMA Negeri 1 Karangrejo is accepted. Whereas, Ho which states that there is no significant effect of using group discussion to teach speaking to second graders at SMA Negeri 1 Karangrejo is rejected. In other words, group discussion can be used as an alternative to teach speaking to the students at SMA Negeri 1 Karangrejo.
