Abstract

Reading as one of skill in English should be mastered by the students. Reading is very important skill, the result of reading activities give the students information in written form. The use of Listen, Read, Discuss Strategy give the students new experience in learning process especially in reading. In this strategy the students divided in several group and they gets three activities in the same time. Students listen explanation about the material, reads the text selection from teacher, and students discuss the material with their groups. The problem formulation in this research is: How is the students’ reading comprehension before being taught by using LRD strategy?, How is the students’ reading comprehension after being taught by using LRD strategy?, and Is there any significant difference on students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using LRD strategy? This research aims to measure the effectiveness of using Listen, Read, Discuss Strategy in reading. It was conducted at SMA Islam Watulimo in the academic year 2017/2018 as research subject. The subject of this study amounted to 79 students of class X. In this research, the researcher used a quantitative approach to finding out answers from research. Technique of data collection used tests. This design of the research was pre-experimental design. The sample determination used purposive sampling technique. The sample of this research is X MIPA class who consist of 27 students teach by using Listen, Read, Discuss Strategy. The researcher provides pretest and posttest for the sample group. The result of this research based on computing T-test using SPSS 20.0, the researcher gave interpretation toward “t” score with compare tvalue with ttable. The tvalue is (5.622) with the significant value is 0.000. The score of ttable is (2.056) with significant level of 0.05. It is known that tvalue is bigger than ttable (5.622 > 2.056). It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Whereas Ha state that teaching reading using LRD strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension of the first grade students of SMA Islam Watilimo is effective. In conclusion, based on the result above states that the students of the first grade at SMA Islam Watulimo have better score after being taught by using Listen, Raed, Discuss Strategy in teaching reading. It is simply concluded that the Listen, Read, Discuss Strategy is effective to teaching reading in the students of Senior High School.
