Abstract

ABSTRACT Muanas, Jadid. Student Registered Number 1723143087. Factors Contributing to Students’ Negative Responses in English Classroom Instruction. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulunaggung. Guided by Dr. Arina Sofiya, M.Pd. Keywords: English Students, Negative Responses, Classroom Instruction English learning instruction in the college classroom is commonly but inaccurately described as easy to manage simply because not a few of students often disincline to respond positively albeit the teacher has tried to use active learning in which engaging students in classroom learning. Teachers excitedly launch a new course, new activity, or new assignment, only to ensure students not to respond negatively. In fact, students’ resistances or negative responses still appear in the classroom. It shows that studying factors related to students’ negative responses are worthwhile. Therefore, this requires the research question as “What are the factors contributing to student response negatively in English classroom instruction?”. Qualitative research with descriptive design tends to investigate the origins of students’ negative responses. This study used in depth interview four times with four subjects for the primary data collection method. While classroom observation was employed twice to confirm the form of students’ negative responses. The data gained from the field were then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Finally, to ensure the finding or to achieve trustworthiness employs “triangulation” by combining the various data collection techniques and data sources, “dependability” by asking for the expert to review the instrument, “transferability” by providing the description of how to select the subjects and setting, and “confirmability” by providing the transcripts of interview and classroom observation. The finding of this study showed there are five factors contributing to students’ negative responses, namely poor self-image as learner, fear of looked foolish in front of public, feel of more threatened, poor interaction with peers, and instructor misbehavior. Those factors are appeared in the form of lack of self-confidence even frustrating and anxiety. Students’ negative responses often appeared in the classroom learning in the state of doing activities unrelated to the topic for example sleeping, discussing with peers, playing mobile phone, busy to make up her appearance, doing the works which are not related to the subject, disturbing the peers by whispering or tapping parts of the body, fanning her/himself with the textbook, reading novel, sleepy (yawning), often getting in and out class, and laughing with their peers.
