English Education Program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keyword: effectiveness, writing descriptive text, scaffolding Writing is one of four skills that should be mastered by students of English, especially in writing descriptive text. Many students were difficult to express the ideas to produce a good writing text. Based on todays curriculum 13, in teaching writing descriptive text, the teacher function as a facilitator who makes the students can do their tasks. To support this skill, the researcher choose one technique for teaching descriptive text. It is scaffolding technique. \ Scaffolding technique is a process conducted by an expert to a subject in process of learning. The teacher not only helps the students in the process of teaching and learning but also their friends, or someone who has higher ability. Teaching descriptive text with scaffolding technique makes the students active and independent. Hence, this research aims at knowing the effectiveness of using Scaffolding Technique on Students Skill in Writing Descriptive Text at The Seven Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol on academic year 2018/2019. The formulation of the research is “Is scaffolding technique effective in teaching writing descriptive text at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol?”. The purpose of this research is to know the scaffolding technique wether it is effective in teaching writing of descriptive text or not. This researcher used pre-experimental design with quantitative approach, with one group pre-test and post-test. It is intended to find out any significant difference scores of the students before and after being taught by using scaffolding technique. The population of this research was seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol in academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this research was seven B class, which consists of 34 students selected by purposive sampling technique. The instrument used in this research were pre-test and post-test. To analyze the collected data, the researcher used SPSS 16.0 version software. The results of this research showed that there is significant difference of score in pre-test and post-test. The graded components of pre-test and post-test are Grammar and Vocabulary. The mean score of pre-test on grammar and vocabulary were 2.35 and 2.76, and in the post-test was 3.03 and 3.38. The different mean score were 0.68 and 0.62. It means that the score of pre-test and post test was higher than pre-test. It can be said that the scaffolding technique is able to change students’ grammar and vocabulary achievement. The research finding in this research showed the difference between the mean of students’ writing descriptive text score before they are taught using Scaffolding Technique (5.09) and after they are taught using Scaffolding Technique (8.26). And the results of SPSS, the significant value is 0.000 < 0.05. It mean (Ho) is rejected and (Ha) is accepted. Based on the result above, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) that state the mean of the students after being given treatment is bigger than the mean of the students before being given treatment while the null hypothesis (Ho) states the mean of the students after being given treatment is smaller than the mean of the students before being given treatment. Finally, it is suggested that Scaffolding Technique is used as alternative teaching technique for English Teacher in teaching and learning activity on writing descriptive text at te seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol.
