Abstract

The existence of grammatical rules is very important in spoken and written language. Consequently, students should be able to understand the theories of English grammar, as well as in practice, they also have to understand how to apply them either in oral or in written form properly. There are many aspects discussed in English grammar. One of them is simple past tense that used to indicate an activity or situation began and ended at particular time in the past. Therefore, teacher as facilitators should able to manage and use method or media which is appropriate in teaching simple past tense. In this research, the researcher used snake and ladder game as medium in teaching simple past tense. Snake and Ladder game can be a good option to teach simple past tense more interesting and fun. This game has a role that can lead students and order to cooperate with other students while playing game. Hence, this research aim at knowing the effectiveness of using Snake and Ladder game toward students’ mastery on simple past tense at the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol on academic year 2018/2019. The formulation of the research problem was: 1) Is there any significant difference toward students’ mastery on simple past tense who were taught by using snake and ladder game and those taught without using snake and ladder game?”. The purpose of this research was : 1) To know any significant difference toward students’ mastery on simple past tense who were taught by using snake and ladder game and those taught without using snake and ladder game. Research method applied in this research included: 1) the research design of this study was quasi-experimental design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this research was all of the second grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol which consist of 12 classes and the total of the students were 367, 3) the sample were VIII H as experimental group which consist of 32 students and VIII K as control group which consist of 35 students, 4) the variable were independent and dependent variable. Independent variable was snake and ladder game and dependent variable was students’ mastery on simple past tense, 5) the research instrument was test, 6) the data analysis was using Independent Sample T-test with SPSS 16.0. The finding showed that there is a significant difference between the result of experimental group and control group. The students’ mean score in experimental group that taught by using snake and ladder game was 73.75. While, in control group that taught without using snake and ladder game was 67.23. So, the improvement in experimental group was higher than control group. In addition, the result of the statistical computation used Independent Sample T-test with SPSS 16.0, showed that the significance value was 0.004. It means that the significance value was smaller than the significance level (0.004 ˂ 0.05). This mean that Ha stated that there is significant difference score in teaching simple past tense by using snake and ladder game and without using snake and ladder game at the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol was accepted. Whereas, H0 which stated that there is no significant difference score in teaching simple past tense by using snake and ladder game and without using snake and ladder game at the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol was rejected. In other word, snake and ladder game was effective in teaching simple past tense at junior high school level. Keywords: effectiveness, snake and ladder game, students’ mastery on simple past tense
