Ma’arif Bakung. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Faizatul Istiqomah, M.Ed. Keywords: Effectiveness, Question Answer Relationship, Descriptive text, reading comprehension. Reading could be the English skill for success in educational context. Through reading, students can get new information and knowledge. In improving the student’s achievement, the teacher has an important role in teaching reading. The teacher should be creative in finding better strategies to deliver the materials. Therefore, question answer relationship is one strategy which can be used to solve the problems in understanding descriptive text on reading comprehension. The formulation of the research problem was: Is QAR strategy effective for teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text at the seventh grade in MTs. Ma’arif Bakung. The objective of this research was to find out if there is any significant different score in the students’ reading comprehension between students’ taught with and without using Question Answer Relationship at the seventh grade in MTs. Ma’arif Bakung in the academic year 2018/2019. The research design of this study was quasi experimental design with quantitative approach. The population is the seventh graders. The number of the population was 380 students. In taking the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling. VII D class was chosen as a control group consisted of 45 students and VII E as a experimental group consisted of 47 students. The data were gethered through test which were delivere into the pre-test and post-test. The data analysis was using Independent Sample t-test by using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) 18.00. The result showed that the students’ mean score in experimental group before being taught using by Question Answer Relationship strategy was 60.96 and the students’ mean score after being taught using by Question Answer Relationship strategy was 80.21. In the control group also there is improvement mean score from 53.56 became 60.56. However, the improvement in experimental group was higher than control group. In addition, the result of the statistical computation used Independent Sample t-test with SPSS 18.00, showed that the significance value is 0.00. It means that the significance value is smaller than the significance level (0.00 < 0.05). The result of significance value indicates that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means there was a significant effect of using Question Answer Relationship strategy on students’ achievement in reading comprehension in MTs. Ma’arif Bakung. Therefore, the use of Question Answer Relationship strategy on reading ability of descritive text is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension.
