Thesis. English Education Program. State Islamic College Institut (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor. Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keyword: Effectiveness, Cue Card, Speaking Ability. Speaking is one of English skill which have to be learned by the students of junior high school. A type of text that should be learned by junior high school students is descriptive text. So, the students should able to practice speaking to describe a particular animal, person, and thing. The problem when they are speak is the difficulties to find idea about what to say and the high anxiety to start practice speaking English. The teacher should choose the appropriate technique or media to teach speaking to solve the problem effectively. One media that can be used to teach speaking is cue card. Cue card is a card which contain picture and clues that can help the students found the idea about what have to say and recall students’ memory of some vocabularies. The procedures to use is firstly students were divide into some group. Each group get one cue card. In group, students think about what to say when they come forward. Then they practice speaking by the guidance of cue card. The formulation of research problem “Is cue card effective for teaching speaking the seventh graders of SMPN 1 Ngunut Tulungagung”. The purpose of the research was to find out if cue card is effective for teaching speaking the seventh graders of SMPN 1 Ngunut Tulungagung. Research method applied in this research included: 1) the research design in this research was quasi-experimental design, 2) the population of this research was all of the seventh graders of SMPN 1 Ngunut Tulungagung which consist of eleven classes which the total of the students were 352 students, 3) the sample was 7F students as experimental group and 7J students as control group, 4) the variable were independent and dependent variable. Independent variable was cue card and the dependent variable was students’ speaking ability, 5) the research instrument was speaking test, 6) the data analysis was using Independent sample T-test using SPSS 23.0 program. The result showed that the students mean score in experimental group before being taught using cue card was 5.97 and the students’ mean score after being taught using cue card was 8.84. In control group, there is also an improvement of mean score from 5.94 to 6.09. However the improvement in experimental group was higher than control group. In addition, the result of the statistical calculation using SPSS 23.0 program used Independent sample T-test showed that the significant value is 0.000. It means that the significant value is smaller than the significant level (0.000<0.05). The result of significant value indicates that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means there was a significant effect of using cue card for teaching speaking the seventh graders of SMPN 1 Ngunut Tulunagagung
