Abstract
Keywords: Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) method, reading comprehension. Reading comprehension often becomes a problem for the students. For example they face some difficulties,identifying main ideas,identifying explicit and implicit in formation. Thus, appropriate method of the teaching and learning is very important to help students master the reading comprehension achievement. This study proposes an alternative method to teach students to reading comprehension by using STAD, in which reading comprehension process is emphasized. In STAD, the students work together in groups, aid each other in completing academic tasks, and provide each other with feedback in order to improve their subsequent performances. Furthermore, they influence each other to achieve mutual goals, act in trusting and trustworthy ways, become motivated, and feel less anxiety and stress. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How is the students score of reading comprehension at MTs Aswaja –Tunggangri without taught using STAD? 2)How is the score students of reading comprehension at MTs Aswaja – Tunggangri taught using (STAD)? 3)Is there any significance difference between the students’score in student reading comprehension without taught using student (STAD) and those who are taught using (STAD)? Research Method: The design of the study was quasi-experimental with a non-randomized control group pretest-posttest. The study was conducted at Second years Student of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri, and the samples were class C as the experimental group and class B as the control group, with 35 students in each group. In collecting the data, two sets of writing test were used as instruments; one of them was used in the pre-test, and the other in the post-test. Both tests, pre-test and post-test, were also used to identify the effect of the treatment on the students' reading comprehension achievement, and the data analysis was using T test. The result showed a) the mean of students score without using STAD is 71.723, it means that is Good score.b) the mean of students score using STAD is 81, it means that is Very good score. C). The Tcount was 3.492, whereas Ttable with significant level 0.995 was 2.743. So, Tcount was greater than Ttable. This means that This revealed that there was enough evidence to reject the null hypotheses; consequently, the alternative hypotheses were accepted. In other word STAD was effective in improving students' expository reading comprehension achievement. Thus, it is suggested that the English teachers utilize this method in their teaching reading to improve students' reading comprehension achievement.
