Thesis. English Education Program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, S.P.d.I., M.Pd. Keyword: Vocabulary, Semantic Mapping Vocabulary is core component of language and provides much of the basis for how well learners speak, listen, read and write. Without an extensive vocabulary and strategies for acquiring new vocabulary, learners often achieve less than their potential and may discourage them from making use of language opportunities around them. Based on researcher observation in MTsN 7 Tulungagung most of the students were get the difficulties in mastering the vocabulary. Hence, it is better for English teachers to find the best strategy to teach vocabulary. One of the strategy that can help the students mastering the vocabulary is Semantic Mapping strategy. Taking part in a Semantic Mapping process activates students’ background information which is about the topic and provides an efficient way to strengthen key words, allowing students to include the new vocabulary into their existing schemata. Semantic mapping assists the learner to learn unknown words through known words in a semantically related network. In this research, it was carried out to investigate “The Effectiveness Of Using Semantic Mapping Strategy Towards Students’ Vocabulary Mastery in Descriptive Text of Seventh Grade at MTsN 7 tulungagung”. The formulation of research problem: Is Semantic Mapping strategy effective towards the students’ vocabulary mastery in descriptive text of seventh grade at MTsN 7 Tulungagung? Based on the formulation of research problem, this research is to find out whether Semantic Mapping strategy is effective or not towards the students’ vocabulary mastery in descriptive text of seventh grade at MTsN 7 Tulungagung. This research was used quantitative approach with pre-experimental research design with one group pretest and posttest design. The population of the research were all of the students of seventh grade at MTsN 7 Tulungagung which consists of 264 students. The sample of this research is VII A class which consists of 45 students. The sample of this research were selected by using purposive sampling technique. Meanwhile, the instruments used in this study were pre-test and post-test. The data collected through pre-test and post-test were analyze by using Paired Samples T-test with SPSS Windows 24.0. The research finding showed that there was increasing score on the students’ vocabulary mastery. It can be seen from the mean of post-test score 82.44, was higher than the mean of pre-test score 66.89. From statistical calculation showed that the significant value is 0.000 which was smaller than the significant level (0.050). It means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.So, it can be concluded that Semantic Mapping strategy was effective and it can be used as an alternative strategy to teach vocabulary. First, by using Semantic Mapping strategy the students can understand the meaning and master the vocabulary better. Second, by using Semantic Mapping strategy, the students more interested enthusiasm and they felt more enjoyed during the learning activity. Third, the students participated more actively in the learning activity because this strategy is student centered
