Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd Keywords: Effectiveness, Speaking Ability, Story Telling, Puppets Speaking skill is one of the keys to communication, as well as a tool for expressing messages to listeners. By speaking, someone is able to express opinions, messages and desires. In this era, English is one of the languages used in the world. English education is very necessary to improve students' speaking abilities. Some of the problems are that the students feel embarrassed when they talk and they often worried that there are a lot of mistakes in the way of pronouncation and the grammatical usages. To solve the problems of speaking, the researcher used puppets as media in story telling in improving students speaking ability. The purpose of this study is to know the effectiveness of using Puppet as media in speaking ability in story telling of class 1 IPA MA Darul Hikmah. In teaching, the students are trained to use puppets as media in story telling. So, students can appear confidant and can express themselves in story telling and confidant to speak in front of their friends. The formulation of research problem was: How is the effect of using Puppet as media in story telling at MA Daru Hikmah Tulungagung? While the aim of the researcher is to find out the significant difference on students' speaking achievement before and after being taught by using that media. The research method used pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test. The sample of this study was class 1 IPA the students consists of 24 female students. The researcher examined five components of speaking skills those are, grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and pronunciation. In analyzing data the researcher used paired simple t-test whether the hypothesis is rejected or accepted. The results showed that the mean score in students' speaking ability before being taught using media puppets was 13.58. While the mean of the student’s score after being taught by using the media is 17.17. It means that the student’s score in speaking ability is increased. Based on the statistics computation result, the significant (p-value) is 0.000, while the significant level is 0.05. Therefore, the significant value is smaller than significant level. In consequence, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected. It can be concluded that puppets media is significantly effective as the media in teaching speaking for the senior high school students.
