Reading is one of the most difficult skill for language learners to be mastered, because in the process of reading, the readers should comperhend the text or combine information from a text and their own background knowledge to build a meaning. Their failures in doing exercise, limited vocabulary and their low motivation influence in their reading achievement. It becomes a challenge for English teacher to increase students’ motivation in order to achive learning goals. So, it needs an interesting strategy. Teachers need a strategy in their instructional process to assist them develop both students’ skills and characters. KWL is one of alternative reading strategies that can be used by teachers to enhance the students’ reading skills. The use KWL strategy give a contribution to improve student’ reading comprehension. The formulation of the research was: “Is there any significant difference on students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using KnowWant-Learn (KWL) strategy to seventh grade students of SMP IT Nurul Fikri?”. Based on the formulation of research problem, the purpose of this research problem was: to know whether there is significant difference on students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught by using Know-Want-Learn (KWL) strategy to seventh grade students of SMP IT Nurul Fikri. The research design of this study was Quasi-Experimental reseach with quantitative approach. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP IT Nurul Fikri which consist of A and B classes. The sample of this research was A and B class that each consist of 26 students. A class as Experimental group consists of 13 male and 13 female students and B class as Control group consists of 11 male and 15 female students. The research instrument was reading comprehension test which is in the form of multiple choices that consist of 20 questions. To measure the data analysis of pre-test and post-tes was using Independent sample T-test with IBM SPSS 16.0. The result showed that the students’ mean score in experimental group before being taught by using KWL strategy was 68,46 and the students’ mean score after being taught by using KWL strategy was 74.23. In control group also there is improvement mean score from 59.42 became 61,73. However, the improvement in experimental group was higher than control group. In addition, the result of the statistical computation used Independent Sample t-test with SPSS 16.00, showed that the significant value is 0.00. It means that the significance value is smaller than the significance level (0.00 < 0.05). The result of significance value indicates that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means there was a significant difference of using KWL strategy on students’ reading comprehension to seventh grade students of SMP IT Nurul Fikri. In the other words, KWL strategy was recommended for the teacher to teach reading especially in descriptive text.
