Abstract

Key Words: Reading Skill, KWL strategy. This study is conducted to investigate the effect of KWL strategy on the students’ ability in English reading, the research problem was formulated as follow: 1. how is the student’s ability in reading when they are taught using KWL strategy? 2. how is the student’s ability in reading when they are taught without using KWL strategy? 3. is there any significance of using KWL strategy on the student’s reading ability? This study has purpose: to investigate whether any significant difference students’ reading ability taught using KWL strategy and the students’ reading ability without using KWL strategy. The design of research was experimental research two group pre-test post-test control group and used quantitative approach. The population of this study is the seventh grade of MTs Wahid Hasyim, Setinggil, Wonodadi. The number of population are147 students. The sampling of this study was stratified random sampling technique and the subjects were two classes. Class A consist of 22 students as an experimental group; whereas, class B consist of 22 students as a control group. The data collecting method and instrument are test and administering test. After the data was collected, t-test was used to analysis the data. The result of data analysis is 2,52 with the degree of freedom is 42 students, an the significant level 5% is 2,02. It means the Null Hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be conclude that “there is significant effect of using KWL strategy in teaching reading on the students’ ability on the seventh grade students of MTs Wahid Hasyim. In accordance with the research finding above, some suggestions related to the adoption of KWL as a strategy of teaching reading are addressed to the English teachers, students and further researcher.
