Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keyword: hedging maxims, cooperative principle, movie. Hedging can be defined as a mitigating device that is used to lessen the impact of an utterance. Based on Yule, hedges is a kind of expression which show the speaker concern to use the maxim to be a cooperative participant in the conversation. This phenomenon is easily found in daily communication, including movie, just like Divergent Movie. The group of Dauntless Faction in this movie were often used hedges in their conversation. This study is aimed to : 1) identify the type of hedges used by dauntless faction in Divergent movie, 2) identify the factor(s) that influence the occurrence of hedges by dauntless faction in Divergent movie. The research design of this study is document analysis and qualitative approach. The data were analyzed descriptively based on related theory of Grice’s and Yule’s hedging maxim of cooperative principle. Moreover, the data were collected from the utterances performed by the group of Dauntless Faction to observe the hedging maxim. They were taken from the transcript of Divergent movie. The result of this study reveals that the type of hedging maxim which is the most frequently used is hedging maxim of quality, hedging maxim of quantity, hedging maxim of relation, and hedging maxim of manner in that order. The group of Dauntless Faction used hedged when the information is not totally accurate or unclearly stated but seems informative, well-founded, and relevant. Based on the analysis, the factor that influencing the occurrence of hedges by Dauntless Faction is because the uncertainly of the utterances, limited information of the speaker, because the speaker or the utterances wants to move to another topic, and to make sure that the hearer will understand about the speaker’s said. Finally, after finishing this research, the researcher hopes that this research can give contribution to the researcher herself, to the readers, and to the further researchers who conduct the same research. It is suggested to the next researchers to study more complete research, especially in the same field.
