Abstract

ABSRTACT Misroh Anik, 2019. The Effectiveness of Smartphone E-Mind Mapping on Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability and Motivation across Different Proficiency Level. Thesis, Graduate Program in English Education, IAIN Tulungagung. Advisors: (1) Dr.Arina Shofia,M.Pd, (2) Dr.Susanto,M.Pd Key Words: Smartphone E-Mind Mapping, Reading Comprehension, Motivation This study is to find out whether Smartphone E-Mind Mapping can improve the students’ ability in comprehending reading passages and motivation. In other words, the main objective of this study is to find out whether the students who have been taught by using E-Mind Mapping achieve better reading comprehension ability and motivation than those who have been taught by using non E-Mind Mapping. To be more specific, this study was conducted to find out: (1) whether high achieving students in experimental group mind who have been taught using Smartphone E-Mind Mapping significantly achieve higher score than high achieving students in the control group, (2) whether low achieving students in the experimental group who have been taught using Smartphone E-Mind Mapping significantly achieve higher score than low achieving students in the control group, (3) whether high achieving students in the experimental group who have been taught using Smartphone E-Mind Mapping achieve higher motivation than high achieving students in the control group, (4) whether low achieving students in the experimental group who have been taught using Smartphone E-Mind Mapping achieve higher motivation than low achieving students in the control group. This study uses quasi-experimental or Non-randomized control group, pre-test-post test design. The sample of the study was students of MAN 1 Tulungagung which is located on Jalan Ki Hajar Dewantoro, Beji,Boyolangu,Tulungagung. They were at the eleventh grade at the second semester. In order to get the result of reading comprehension and motivation between experimental and control group, Manova of General Linear Model was applied with significane 5% level. The result of Manova of General Linear Linear Model revelead that that the sig value of reading comprehension was 0.811 and the sig value of motivation was 0.01. From the this point it can be said that Smartphone E-Mind Mapping could not help the students to gain a better achievement in reading comprehension but it could be used to improve the students’ motivation. In addition, The result of Manova of General Linear model showed that the sig value of reading comprehension was 0.95 and the sig value of motivation was 0.012. It can be inferred that there is no significant effect of Smartphone E-Mind Mapping on reading comprehension of high achieving students. on the other hand, there is a significant effect of Smartphone E-Mind Mapping on the high achieving students’ motivation. While the result of Manova of the low achieving students showed that the sig value of reading comprehension was 0.092 and the sig value of motivation score was 0.27. it can ii be concluded that there is no significant effect of Smartphoe E-Mind Mapping on reading comprehension of low achieving students. however, there is a significant effect of Smartphone E-Mind Mapping on motivation of low achieving students.
