Abstract
Keywords: grammatical error, writing, report text, error analysis Grammar is one of important element in writing, and its role becomes more essential for certain kind of text such as report text. However, in process of language learning, not all students can compose their writing with well-constructed grammar. Some students still tend to make errors. The same went to the students of XI IPS grade of MAN Kunir Blitar. They were not perfect. Moreover, any English lesson they had learnt needed checking whether the students had achieved the learning objective or not. Here, discovering any possible errors made by the students in their writing could be very helpful in any purposes for teacher. As those errors could be significant for students’ progress, teacher should act towards the errors. Thus, it was necessary to uncover what kinds of grammatical errors students made before further action is then made. Research problems in this study were: 1) What common grammatical errors do the XI IPS grade students of MAN Kunir make? What is the source of the errors made by the students? The purposes of this study were to uncover: 1) common grammatical errors often made by the XI-IPS students of MAN Kunir Blitar and 2) the source of errors made by the students. Research method applied in this study included 1) content analysis with qualitative approach as its design, 2) students’ writing (in the form of document) which number was 77 pages as subject of the study, 3) document as instrument of collecting data, and 4) error analysis as method of analyzing data. This study found that there were 408 errors made by the students in composing their writing. 49.3 % or 201 cases of them were error of omission. There were also 12 % or 49 errors of addition. 29.4 % or 120 errors were classified into substitutive or misformation errors, while 9.3 % or 38 errors were word order errors. The errors were then specified into certain grammatical aspects. This study also found out that the sources of the errors were various. The first source was incomplete application of rule which had caused 39.7 % of error total. Other sources were ignorance of rule restriction, overgeneralization and false concept of hypothesis.
