The research method was classroom action research with cycle models of teaching learning treatments. In the first cycle, the action was teaching English through role play by using mapped dialogues to improve students’ speaking ability. In each meeting, the time allotment was 40 minutes. In the second cycle, the action was teaching English through role play by using role interaction in cards to improve students’ speaking ability.. The time provided in each meeting was 40 minutes. The action research was carried out to know how the use of role play can improve the seventh grade students’ speaking ability at MTs Negeri 6 Tulungagung in the 2018/2019 academic year. The respondents were the seventh year students at MTs Negeri 6 Tulungagung. The primary data were gathered from the students’ speaking test results. Meanwhile, observation and field note were done to get the supporting data. The primary data was analyzed quantitatively by using the mean score formula, and the supporting data was analyzed qualitatively based on the real conditions. The result of the action in every cycle was different. The research had proved that the action of teaching English through role play by using mapped dialogue in cycle one could not reach the average standard minimum passing score (75.00), because in cycle on the average score was 66.33. In other side, the action of teaching English through role play by using role interaction in cards in cycle two could reach the average standard minimum passing score, because in cycle two the average score was 76.40. That is why, the English teacher is suggested to use role play by using role interaction through cards to improve the students’ speaking ability. It would be more interesting and attractive, and the students would be more motivated to join the speaking activity.
