ABSTRACT Ma’arif, Rizki. Student Registered Number. 1723143152. 2020. The Informal Words Made by the Students’ of IAIN Tulungagung in Writing Thesis. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Hj. Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Keywords: informal words, thesis writing. One of the preeminent forms of academic writing in education is dissertation or thesis. The purpose of thesis is to show the ability to effectively communicate the information on a given topic on a professional level. The good academic writing has standard rule which using formal word. On the contrary, there are excessively university students use informal language on their thesis. This prompts the researcher to conduct a research about informal language in English Education Department students’ thesis. This study wants to know if students of English Education Department at IAIN Tulungagung use informal language in their thesis background. The researcher focuses on two research questions; 1) What types of informal word are made by the students’ of English Department at IAIN Tulungagung in writing their thesis? and 2) How is the frequency for each type of informal language used in thesis by the students’ of English Departement at IAIN Tulungagung? The purpose of the study is to know types of informal language word are made by the students’ of English Department at IAIN Tulungagung in writing their thesis and the frequency for each type of informal language used in thesis by the students’ of English Departement at IAIN Tulungagung. To attain those research purposes, the researcher used quantitative research approach by analizing the document. The data of this study are 20 students’ thesis background in last five years 2014-2018. Then, in this research, the researcher analyze the informal language used in students’ thesis through reading, coding and analysing. The result of the first research question is that students of English Teacher Education Department in the fifth year (2014-2018) used four types of informality in their thesis. The four types are multi word, emotive language, use of question and constracted forms. The second can be concluded that constracted form are the most frequently type occurred in students’ thesis.
