Abstract

Developing English Learning Material Based on Local Wisdom for Vocational High School Students of Online Business and Marketing Program. Thesis. English Education Department. Magister Program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisors: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd and Dr. H. Nursamsu,S.Pd.I., M.Pd. Keywords: English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Online Business and Marketing (OBM), Local Wisdom, and English Learning Material. This study was carried out based on the fact that vocational high school students were taught by using same English book for general high school. This fact was in contrast to the need of students where students of vocational high school who have been taught by using English for Specific Purposes. Then, this study was done to develop appropriate English book for Online Business and Marketing Program. The aims of this study were: (1) to analyze the kind of material that students’ needs at Online Business and Marketing students, (2) to develop English teaching material based on local wisdom for Online Business and Marketing students, and (3) to describe the level of users’ satisfaction toward the product. The subject of this Research and Development was the X graders students of Online Business and Marketing Program which consisted of 36 students. This research was conducted by following model of steps of Borg & Gall (1938:772). The procedure to do this research was need analysis, planning, developing preliminary, preliminary field testing, revision, final product, try out, and user validation. The instrument used to collect the data is questionnaire which consist of questionnaire of need analysis, expert validation, and user validation. The result of need analysis was used to know students’ dreamed book. The result of need analysis was used to develop the first draft material. The first draft material was evaluated by the validator. The result of expert validator evaluation were then analyzed through descriptive statistics and used to revise the draft. This R&D reveals that the students need English learning material that suitable with their specific program, so the English book should be developed. After doing the process of R&d, the product development was consisted of 7 units. Each unit was completed with material about business, marketing, and based on local wisdom. Based on the expert validation; the content, the language, the presentation, and the graphic of the material appropriateness was categorized “Very Good”. The validator suggests that the book should give the example in each unit and to give attention at the grammar and structure. After revising, the product was tried out to the students. The unit was chosen was unit 2. After tried out, students were asked to fulfill user validation questionnaire. The result showed that students were satisfied with the book product. They answered that the book was cool, good, easy to learn and understand, the material was appropriate with their specific program, and complete with material about local wisdom.
