Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, SS, M. Pd. Keywords: independent learning, speaking skill, non-English student English is an international language that seems more difficult to learn when compared to Indonesian, which is our mother tongue. Even so there is nothing wrong if we try to learn the language, considering that in modern times it is increasingly advanced and certainly uses English in the process. In learning English, not all students have the same interests. There are some students who really like learning English so that when in class they will pay attention well, and outside the classroom they will learn again using other methods that they think are easier. This action is called independent learning. Independent learning is students’ effort that they used to solve their problem in learning process outside of class. The statement of the research problem is “What learning activities do Non-English Department students do to improve their speaking skills?”. The research method used in this research is descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were three students who were selected through questionnaires. The data in this study were selected information and descriptions of activities carried out by non-English students of the IAIN Tulungagung department. Data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews. The data in this study are statements and descriptions, including qualitative data. The data analysis procedures are: 1) the researcher collects the data through in-depth interviews, 2) the researcher transcribes, selects, and focuses the data by referring to the research problem,3) the researcher displays the selected data in a narrative or description form, 4) draws conclusions.The results showed that the activities carried out by students were: listening to music, reading aloud, and watching movies. The results of this study can be useful for students and future researchers.
