English Education Department. Graduate Program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungaggung. Keywords: Reading, Junior High School, WhatsApp, Motivation The objectives of the research is to investigate whether there is significant difference on the mean score of the students’ reading ability and their motivation between students who are taught by WhatsApp and non WhatsApp. The method which was applied in this research was experimental study. The research was conducted at MTs Salafiyah Margomulyo Tuban in the academic year 2018/2019 from Maret-April 2019. The population in this research is the seventh grade students of MTs Salafiyah Magomulyo,Tuban. The total number of sample is 62 students coming from two classes. The sampling of the research is purposive sampling. The sample are VII D as the experimental group and VII C as the control group. The choice of the students was made by considering the following reasons: (1) the students never uses WhatsApp in English class (2) they have same background, meaning that they get four hours a week of English lesson, (3)they have same competence of English. In order to get the result of reading comprehension and motivation between WhatsApp geoup and non WhatsApp group, Kruskal-Wallis was applied.. The finding of this research show that There is significant difference on the mean score of the students’ reading ability and their motivation between students who are taught by WhatsApp and non WhatsApp. Based on the mean score of the students reading comprehension who are taught by WhatsApp is 73.06 and 61.12. While the mean score of the students’ motivation who are taught by WhatsApp is 83.03 and the mean score of the student who are taught by non WhatsApp is 75.96. After applying Kruskal-Wallis, it indicate that the sig value of of reading comprehension was 0.021 and the sig value of motivation was 0.023. Since sig value of reading and motivation was less than 5% level of significance, it can be concluded that the null hypotheses rejected. From this point, it can be said that Whatsapp could help student to give better achievement in reading comprehension and could be used to improve their motivation. Finally, the research findings imply that the use WhatsApp can foster the students’ reading comprehension. The evidence in this research indicate that the students taught using WhatsApp have better reading comprehension and motivation than those taught using non WhatsApp. Therefore, it is recommended for English teacher to apply WhatsApp in reading class.
